Grey's Anatomy Season 22 recap: What to remember before Season 23 debuts on ABC

The long-running medical drama continues with its 23rd outing this October

The Shonda Rhimes-created medical procedural drama Grey's Anatomy has been captivating audiences for more than two decades, and that's set to continue with the imminent launch of Season 23 on ABC. So, what do you need to remember from Grey's Anatomy Season 22 in advance of the upcoming season's impending arrival?

What is Grey's Anatomy?

Grey's Anatomy follows the personal and professional lives of the doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. The cast of characters includes Ellen Pompeo as Meredith Grey, Chandra Wilson as Miranda Bailey, James Pickens Jr. as Richard Webber, Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd, Jason George as Ben Warren, Chris Carmack as Atticus Lincoln, Anthony Hill as Winston Ndugu, Alexis Floyd as Simone Griffith, Harry Shum Jr. as Benson Kwan, Adelaide Kane as Jules Millin, Niko Terho as Lucas Adams and Trevor Jackson as Wes Bryant.

The show has, as we said above, run for more than two decades and launched three separate spinoffs during that time. If you're looking to catch up, we have a guide on how to watch it all right here.

What happened in the Grey's Anatomy Season 22 finale?

At the conclusion of Grey's Anatomy Season 22, several major developments transpired, many of them related to the collapse of the Royer Bridge. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) survived his car plunging into the water, and after the near-death experience, found himself re-evaluating priorities. Ultimately he chose to leave Grey Sloan and relocate to Paris with Teddy Altman (Kim Raver). As a result, both Owen and Teddy will no longer appear as main cast members on the series. After the bridge incident, Meredith proposed to Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). And Amelia hooks up with Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush), complicating her relationship dynamic with Toni Wright (Jen Landon).

The release date for the first episode of Grey's Anatomy Season 23 on ABC is Thursday, October 15th, 2026 at 10:00 PM ET/PT, with new episodes available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
