Grey’s Anatomy season 23: Release date, returning cast, exit updates & everything we know

Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. will return to the long-running ABC medical drama, but some other familiar faces will be missing

The final episode of Grey's Anatomy Season 22 aired on May 7th, 2026, leaving devoted viewers questioning whether or not the long-running, record-breaking series will be returning for another year. Fortunately, the answer to that question is a resounding "yes"! Grey's Anatomy Season 23 has already been confirmed by ABC and will begin airing in the fall of 2026 - but not all the fan-favorite cast will be returning.

Grey's Anatomy is the story of the medical staff at the fictional Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle, Washington. The show, created by Shonda Rhimes, is the longest running scripted primetime series currently airing, and the longest running medical drama, in American television history.

Grey's Anatomy has had some cast members come and go over the years. When the show returns for its twenty-third season, the cast will no longer include Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) and Kim Raver (Teddy Altman), both of whom departed the series in the Season 22 finale. However, you can expect the return of Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr (Richard Webber).

ABC has officially confirmed that Grey's Anatomy will retain its Thursday 10pm timeslot in the 2026-2027 broadcast season, but has not given a date for the season premiere as of writing. Based on past seasons, it should be expected that Grey's Anatomy Season 23 will begin in late September or early October 2026.
