You haven’t lived until you’ve watched Twin Peaks. David Lynch’s show was a landmark in network television, as it defied contemporary standards and embraced the surreal. The basic premise of the show is that an FBI agent named Dale Cooper, played by Kyle MacLachlan, travels to Twin Peaks, Washington, to investigate the murder of a local girl named Laura Palmer. Over the course of two seasons, Agent Cooper will discover that nothing is as it seems in Twin Peaks, not even the owls. While this premise may seem familiar at this point, trust me, you’ve never seen anything like Twin Peaks.
The original series and its 2017 limited series are now collected in this Twin Peaks: The Complete Television Collection Blu-ray box set that’s 35% off on Amazon for Black Friday. The set is on sale for $49.99, down from $76.99, which is a pretty great deal. Like many folks in this millennium, I got into Twin Peaks when the show was streaming on Netflix ten years ago (those were the days, man). Since the show acquired a cult following after its cancellation in 1991, it never quite got the Friends treatment in terms of merchandise and box sets until recent years. To be able to hold discs with episodes of Twin Peaks in my hands is pretty special since the show was so intangible to me for so long.
Today, you can throw a rock into the detective television subgenre and you’re bound to hit a show that’s influenced by Twin Peaks. I mean, the show Wayward Pines arguably wouldn’t exist without Twin Peaks. The fact that David Lynch, director of Blue Velvet and Eraserhead, got to make a network TV series for ABC feels as surreal as the work that he creates. So do yourself a favor this holiday season; give the gift of horrors beyond human comprehension with Twin Peaks: The Complete Television Collection.
