Hazbin Hotel creator Vivienne Medrano admits the show pumped the brakes on the Lillith storyline... but they're coming back to it in season 3
According to Medrano, Charlie Morningstar's mother "is the one thing if people notice like, 'Oh, yeah, they really set her up and then didn't do anything.' I'm like, 'Yeah, we Yeah, we did. Sorry.'"

There are so many lore questions we have about Hazbin Hotel, and one of the biggest has got to be - what is up with Lilith?? The largely absent mother of main character Charlie Morningstar has been at the heart of so much online fan speculation, perhaps mostly because of how she appeared in season 2. Or rather, how she didn't appear in season 2. After season 1, fans felt they were primed to meet the ex-wife of Lucifer, only to have that revelation pushed back a full chapter.
And according to series creator Vivienne Medrano, fans were right to feel that way.
The Hazbin and sister series Helluva Boss creator recently sat down for an interview with Collider's Perri Nemiroff, during which the series creator revealed that the break in Lilith's story arc came not from forgetting about her character, but from being able to do more with the story than the writing team previously envisioned.
"When we wrote season one," said Medrano, "We had no idea what the future was [...] we wrote season one in this vacuum and we made it in this vacuum of we had no idea what the future holds for this show. And then Amazon came in and swooped up and greenlit a second season without even the airing of the first, which I'm still so thankful for."
"So with season two," continued the creator, who sometimes goes by VivziePop, "I kind of took the risk of going, 'There's a part of the story and there's a part of the lore and the twists and everything that I'm dying to tell [...] do I jump into that story or do we take the time to do some of the stuff that we wanted to do season one but couldn't? And I chose that.'"
Medrano doesn't specify which key plot element of season 2 was what she wanted to expanded on at this point in the interview, but later on, we do get an absolute confirmation that what she left behind to do so was a proper introduction to Lilith.
"I will admit," the creator continued, "The Lilith thing that we teased in season one was partially because, like I said, we didn't know what we would get. And I, again, when I said I took the risk to to pivot the story and give that more time, that was what we did. And so we did have to go, 'All right, we're saving [Lilith].' So that is the one thing if people notice like, 'Oh, yeah, they really set her up and then didn't do anything.' I'm like, 'Yeah, we did. Sorry, sorry, sorry.' [...] We just had zero time."
What fans should take from this conversation, though, is that they do have the time for Lilith in the show's next chapter.
"Season 3 is she is there," Medrano confirmed. "I promise!"
OK, Viv, but we're holding you to it this time.
Hazbin Hotel seasons 1 & 2 are streaming on Prime Video now.
