Richard Steven Horvitz has voiced characters in countless cartoons and video games, including the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Ivander Zim, Destroy All Humans! and Ratchet & Clank. Horvitz plays the neurotic weapons expert of I.M.P. or Immediate Murder Professionals on the YouTube sensation Helluva Boss, which is coming soon to Amazon Prime. He said he's settled into a different role on the hit adult animation show that mixes black comedy, musical numbers, and a lot of hellfire and brimstone.
"By the time I got to Helluva Boss, I had 50 years as a professional actor, which is weird because I'm only 38," he quips during a Fan Expo Chicago panel. "What I discovered was the Ron Howard effect. I had done a lot of leading roles. But now it's fun to sit back behind the scenes and watch the joy of all these amazing performers and not feel that I have to be in front of the mic all the time."
Playing Moxxie is a lot of fun but not the best part of the show, Horvitz says.
"What I really enjoy mostly is getting to be part of the production family," he says. "When you're a voiceover actor, you go in, you do your job, and you go on to the next job. You feel like that was just a job. I've always felt I want to be part of it on a grander scale because I want to be part of the whole art, the whole picture. I get to do that with this show. I get to be a comrade and confident with [show creator Vivienne Medrano], which is really just an honor. I guess what I've learned from this is that it's okay to want to just sit back and watch the joy of these performers."
Helluva Boss will be released on Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 10.
