House of the Dragon season 3 is going in the exact opposite direction as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

HBO has released the House of the Dragon season 3 trailer, and the fire and blood within reminds us just how different the Dunk & Egg spinoff is to other Westeros fare

It's been two months since A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms wrapped on HBO Max, and already, we're missing Westeros. Thankfully, the gods have seen fit to give us a brand new tease at what's coming down the pike for the George R.R. Martin-created fantasy world, although we have to add a disclaimer before we show you that. The next return to the Game of Thrones universe - that is, House of the Dragon season 3 - is going to be very, very different than what we saw in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

We'll explain in just a sec, but first, check out this House of the Dragon season 3 trailer.

Pretty epic, right? With multiple dragons, a couple of bloody battles, and even some scenes at sea, House of the Dragon season 3 feels larger than A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms just in its trailer alone. And therein lies what separates the two series - where the adventures of Dunk & Egg were narrowed to a single tournament and a handful of characters, House of the Dragon is banking on viewers coming back for its Game of Thrones-scale sets and plotlines. But don't just take my word for it.

Speaking at CCXP Mexico, House of the Dragon star Matt Smith teased season 3 as the biggest the show had tackled yet. "This season," he said, as relayed by The Hollywood Reporter, "We’re trying to make it bigger, bolder, bloodier, more brutal, more dangerous — just get back to the nuts and bolts of what we are as a show." Compare that to statements made by George R.R. Martin himself, who said that the key to making A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was that "This doesn’t have any dragons or big battles, [...] It has a field and a lot of tents and some horses."

(And dancing, George. Sexy, sexy dancing.)

So the question we're left with is, 'Will House of the Dragon's return to form be a good thing or a bad thing for the Game of Thones spinoff?' On the one hand, critics and audiences alike loved the pared-down approach to Westeros in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but on the other, House of the Dragon's storyline (based on Martin's Fire & Blood novel) is significantly grander in scale. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if more really is more once the next season drops.

House of the Dragon comes to HBO and HBO Max June 21. Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon seasons 1 & 2,  and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 are streaming now on HBO Max.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 may have wrapped on HBO Max, but with House of the Dragon season 3 coming just around the corner, it's always a great time to read up on all things Game of Thrones. Fortunately, Popverse has everything you need to journey through the George R.R. Martin-created Westeros, including:

Plus much more coming as it gets announced!

Grant DeArmitt: Grant DeArmitt (he/him) likes horror, comics, and the unholy union of the two. In the past, and despite their better judgment, he has written for Nightmare on Film Street and Newsarama. He lives in Brooklyn with his partner, Kingsley, and corgi, Legs.
