Twin Peaks' Kyle MacLachan still wonders what Agent Cooper is up to after The Return

"He is in this limbo stage," the Dale Cooper actor said about his globally-beloved Twin Peaks character. But that's not the answer you might think it is

What the hell is going on at the end of Twin Peaks: The Return? After the passing of co-creator and director David Lynch, it's unlikely we'll ever get answers to those questions, but does that stop all of us fans out here in the Black Lodge from wondering? Not in the least. Hell, there are people intimately involved in the show that still regularly wonder about what's going on with the indefatigable Dale Cooper.

Including Dale Cooper himself.

Or at least - the real-world avatar of Dale Cooper, actor and David Lynch collaborator Kyle MacLachlan. As you know if you've been keeping an eye on Popverse's socials lately, I got a chance to sit down with MacLachlan at Emerald City Comic Con 2026, and as one of those ever-curious Twin Peaks fans myself, I had to ask: are there any Twin Peaks mysteries you still wonder about?

"That's the brilliance of David, right?" said MacLachlan, "That some questions are answered, but many are not. I mean, he's all about the question and less about the answer. But yeah, I I think about Cooper's journey, of course, and where we left him at the end of The Return, and what that means, and where he might be, and what are the next steps for him?"

"There are no answers," The Lowdown actor clarified, "He is in this limbo stage."

But let's say there was another season of Twin Peaks: the Return. What does MacLachlan think would be the "next steps" In Agent Dale Cooper's investigation into the death of Laura Palmer?

"If there had ever been talk of another one," MacLachlan said, "That question may or may not have been answered. We don't know; it is David after all. But I'm sure that we would go through a series and then there would be more questions at the end of that one."

"It's just like an itch that you continually want to scratch," MacLachlan laughs, "And that's that's the brilliance of David Lynch."

Twin Peaks, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with me, and Twin Peaks: The Return are all streaming on Paramount+. You can watch Popverse's interview with Kyle MacLachlan from ECCC '26 here:
