The emotional spectrum is growing inside the new DC Universe, with the news that Lanterns — the HBO series from DC Studios and WBTV — has cast Sinestro, the arch-nemesis (and occasional member) of the Green Lantern Corps.
Deadline has the exclusive that Ulrich Thomsen will play Thaal Sinestro, the one-time Green Lantern who betrayed the Corps by falling prey to his own ego, and ultimately became the group’s greatest enemy. The Danish actor, who’s appeared in Banshee, Counterpart, The Young Pope, and The Blacklist, follows in the footsteps of actors including Jason Isaacs, Victor Garber, Miguel Ferrer, and Ron Perlman in portraying the character; each of the previous actors have done so in animated form, with Mark Strong playing the villain in the 2011 live action Green Lantern movie.
It’s unclear at this point just “which” Sinestro will appear in the HBO original series — the early version of the character who was an untrustworthy, egotistical member of the Green Lantern Corps, the disgraced former Lantern who is a rogue villain loose in the galaxy, or the latter day disciple of Parallax, a literal entity of fear that powers his ‘Sinestro Corps’ power rings.
Lanterns, which is expected to go into production later this year, also stars Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as the two Green Lanterns of the show’s title, John Stewart and Hal Jordan, respectively.
