The beloved long-running police procedural and legal drama Law & Order will be returning to NBC in the fall for Season 26. But in advance of its return, you'll want to recall all the developments that took place before the season break. What is Law & Order?
Law & Order is the long-running police procedural and legal drama created by the legendary Dick Wolf. The series originally debuted in 1990 and ran for twenty seasons before going on an eleven year hiatus. But then in 2022, the show was revived, and the release date for Law & Order Season 26 on NBC will be October 8th, 2026.
The series is set and filmed in New York City, and each episode is divided into two parts. In the first, the detected of the New York Police Department investigate a homicide. And in the second, the Manhattan district attorney's office prosecutes the defendant for the crime. Currently the series stars Hugh Dancy as Executive Assistant District Attorney Nolan Price, Odelya Halevi as Assistant District Attorney Samantha Maroun, Reid Scott as Senior Detective Vincent Riley, Tony Goldwyn as District Attorney Nicholas Baxter, Maura Tierney as Lieutenant Jessica Brady and David Ajala as Junior Detective Theo Walker.
What happened in the Law & Order Season 25 finale?
The Season 25 finale of Law & Order concerned the murder of Navy Vice Admiral Wally Kane, who was killed by his commanding officer Admiral Garvey after it was revealed Kane had accepted bribes. However, the case was further complicated by the fact that Judge Kenneth Sullivan (Anthony Edwards) was corrupt, and steered the proceedings in Garvey's favor. Thanks to a secret plea deal organized by Price, Baxter is saved from a lengthy and costly political battle with the judge, and Garvey does accept some responsibility. However, while this incident was brought to a satisfying close, the underlying corruption in the legal system remains present.
The release date for the premiere of Law & Order Season 26 is Thursday, October 8th, 2026 at 10/9c on NBC, with new episodes available to stream in the next day on Peacock.
