Invincible, the TV show, won't repeat the Spawn cameo from Invincible, the comic - here's why

Robert Kirkman says legal complications keep Spawn from appearing on Prime Video’s Invincible animated series

If you’re a comic book reader who watches Invincible on Prime Video, then you might notice some changes the animated series makes. For example, the Invincible War episode featured lots of characters, but Spawn was conspicuously absent. Image Comics’ signature antihero lent his hand in the original comic book, but Invincible creator Robert Kirkman says there are complications preventing the character from crossing over in animation.

“Some of that was because in comics, you could freewheel,” Robert Kirkman says during a New York Comic Con panel 2025. “A good example is Spawn. Spawn appears in the comic. That’s because I can call Todd on the phone - Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn - and say, ‘Hey, can Spawn appear in this issue?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah.’ And it happens.”

And that’s just what happened in Invincible #60, aka ‘The Invincible War.’ However, animation is more complicated because of Spawn’s television and film rights.

“When you’re on Amazon Prime and you’re a show, I call Todd and I go, ‘Can Spawn appear in a TV show?’ And he’s like, ‘Oh, I’ve got to call Jason Blum. I’ve got to do the other thing. I’ve got to go to this person.’ And then I’m like, ‘It’s too much trouble.’ And then we don’t do it.”

Invincible season three premieres March 2026 on Amazon Prime Video. Just don’t expect Spawn to show up.
