The secret to playing Marvel Studios' Daredevil right is not being the perfect hero and being a little broken, according to star Charlie Cox

Charlie Cox discusses the dichotomy of Marvel’s Daredevil and why it’s good that he’s a flawed hero

Daredevil isn’t always a nice guy, but that’s why Charlie Cox loves him.

In many ways, Matt Murdock is a walking contradiction. His actions as Daredevil compromise the cases he works on as Matt Murdock. It’s not only against the law, but it would also get Murdock disbarred in real life. Daredevil is also a hero who doesn’t always make the right choices. Sometimes he’s a bad friend to Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, and sometimes he makes morally questionable choices.

Charlie Cox, who has been playing the character since the 2015 Netflix series, is fascinated by this dichotomy.

“I read a lot of Daredevil comics and continue to read a lot of Daredevil comics to try to continue to bring the essence of how he’s been written over however many decades it’s been,” Cox says during a panel at Fan Expo Cleveland.

“I remember thinking early on that with superheroes in general the danger is superheroes are such a force for good, and there’s so much positivity in general, and they are a beacon of hope, and morally always kind of transcend what it is to be human in themselves. I remember thinking that’s really important, but it’s also potentially dangerous in terms of characterization. I’m not sure that we relate to people like that. I relate to people’s struggles as a human, and triumphs over difficulty and adversity and stuff like that.”

“I felt with Matt it was really important to accentuate the elements that you wouldn’t associate with a superhero. Knowing that in the writing and in his actions there will be enough of the superheroness in those things. I like it when Matt loses his temper and he isn’t his best self in front of Karen or Foggy or something like that. I like the idea that people see what he does and say, ‘Wow he’s fearless. He’s the man without fear.’ But actually, he feels great fear.”

Daredevil: Born Again season two premieres on Disney+ in March 2026.
