Marvel Studios learned not all of the MCU needs to be okay for children with Netflix's Daredevil, according to Charlie Cox

Charlie Cox praises Marvel Studios for letting Daredevil keep its adult tone, saying that the character exists better in a mature space

The Marvel Universe is an interesting place. You have characters like Doctor Strange having magical and multidimensional escapades from his home base in New York’s Greenwich Village, and several blocks away you have Daredevil having grounded and gritty adventures in Hell’s Kitchen.

From the Guardians of the Galaxy to Thor, Marvel Studios has a wide spectrum of storytelling, but Charlie Cox is glad Daredevil gets to exist in a mature space. The actor, who plays Matt Murdock in the 2015 Netflix Daredevil series and the 2024 Disney+ follow-up Daredevil: Born Again, recently mused about the character’s place in the larger MCU.

“I think something that was learned when we made the Netflix show was that there are certain characters that just exist better in a more mature tone, and I think Daredevil is one of them,” Charlie Cox says while speaking to a crowd at Fan Expo Cleveland.

“Even if you go back to the comics, there are some wonderful comic runs that are very kind of PG and light-hearted and fun, and there’s a lot of levity in them. But I don’t think that they can compare to the Bendis/Maleev, Born Again, The Man Without Fear, Guardian Devil, all of them, the character just thrives in that space.”

“[Netflix series creator] Drew Goddard knew that. [Netflix showrunner] Steve DeKnight knew that. Netflix and Marvel allowed us to lean into it. The other thing we learned was that…I think the fear is in the past is that you’re going to alienate such a large portion, how can you make superhero content that children can’t watch. What we learned is that they are a lot of adult kids, and there are a lot of people who love this character and grew up with this character, and they want to see something that’s for them, and not dulled down too much.”

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 will premiere on Disney+ in March 2026.
