VisionQuest is "the end" of this chapter of Wanda and Vision's relationship, says Marvel's Paul Bettany

Vision actor Paul Bettany says the show is a "huge" swing and "the end to a trilogy of sorts" with WandaVision and Agatha All Along

Marvel's upcoming VIsionQuest series on Disney+ puts Paul Bettany's android in the starring role, with Bettany himself calling the show a "huge" swing that follows up on previous Marvel series WandaVision and Agatha All Along, each of which has established a tragic family tree for Vision and Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff - a character who seemingly died in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

VisionQuest marks Bettany's fifth time as the so-called synthezoid, following Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers Infinity War, and the aforementioned WandaVision. Now that Bettany's Vision is taking the central role in VisionQuest, he says the show has managed to carve out its own niche and its own voice among the projects that have made up the tragic love story of Vision and Wanda.

"It manages to feel very much like it's somehow a part of that world, an end to a trilogy of sorts, whilst also being very much its own thing," Bettany told Happy Sad Confused. "It is just really good. I'm really proud of it. We've been in editorial for a long while now, and I keep seeing cuts of it that are just getting better and better as all the effects get placed in. It's funny, it's moving, and it's super exciting. [Showrunner Terry Matalas] did a great job."

In comics, Vision and Wanda's starcrossed romance was one of Marvel's central stories through the '70s and '80s, with the couple anchoring the Avengers while also appearing in a pair of their own limited series. The comic story with the title 'VisionQuest' marks the functional end of their long term relationship, as Vision is destroyed and rebuilt after succumbing to a villainous AI who mind-controlled him.

Aspects of that plotline have already been reflected in the MCU. Vision's destruction in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War gave way to being rebuilt in a new colorless body, which is also how he was rebuilt in comics. Sadly, in comic book lore, this also cost him his ability to feel emotion, putting a distance between Vision and Wanda that has never quite been fully closed again.

As a lifelong Avengers fan, Vision is one of my favorite characters, and Bettany has always done the character great justice with a surprising amount of sensitivity and humanity - all qualities that define the Vision in his classic comic era. I'm looking forward to seeing him take center stage in VisionQuest, which also brings back James Spader's Ultron as the foil to Bettany's Vision.

VisionQuest is scheduled to premiere October 14 on Disney+.
