35 years later, an in-canon sequel to Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze's Point Break is being made

The Ex-Presidents are about to burst back onto the screen, as AMC Networks is planning a follow-up to 1991 surf crime classic Point Break

It’s taken more than three decades, but the Ex-Presidents are about to make a comeback. The network behind Interview with the Vampire and the whole Anne Rice Immortal Universe is headed back to the multiplex to find source material for its next big small screen success, planning a TV sequel for iconic 1991 surf action movie and all-time classic bromance Point Break.

Deadline is reporting that AMC is developing a continuation of the 1991 movie that starred Patrick Swayze as the charismatic leader of a surf gang turned criminal organization called the Ex-Presidents, which found itself infiltrated by undercover FBI agent Johnny Utah, as played by Keanu Reeves. (Yes, his name is Johnny Utah.) The report makes it clear that this won’t be a reboot, a la AMC’s Interview with a Vampire; it will be a sequel, set 35 years after the original movie.

The as-yet-untitled project will be written and executive produced by David Kalstein, who’s a veteran of shows like NCIS: Los Angeles, Quantico, and Treadstone, and has most recently been co-running the Prime Video spy thriller Butterfly. He’ll be working with AMC Studios and Alcon Television Group on the show; if the latter sounds familiar, it’s because it’s working on another television spin-off of a popular movie property, with Blade Runner 2099 scheduled to debut on Prime Video in 2026.

No cast or release date has been mentioned for the new Point Break show as of writing — but assuming development goes as smoothly as the Ex-Presidents’ bank heists, that might change in the next few months. For now, maybe it’s time to take a break from the holidays and stream the original on Peacock.
