My Adventures with Superman showrunner already has us guessing which anime inspired their Green Lantern series

YuYu Hakusho and Sailor Moon seem like the obvious suspects for a Jesssica Cruz animated series, but what other Toonami classic is Jake Wyatt referring to?

We aren’t the first people to notice the anime influence of My Adventures with Superman; it wasn’t subtle with how it directly lifted character designs and influence from shows like Dragon Ball Z, which only made us enjoy it even more. Now, the series's showrunner has confirmed that their spin-off, My Adventures with Green Lantern, will remind fans of a “different part” of the Toonami block on Cartoon Network. Which show is he referring to? He hasn’t said yet, but that hasn’t stopped us from doing some speculation.

During a recent interview where he discussed the upcoming season of My Adventures with Superman, including the new poster with Cyborg Superman front and center, showrunner Jake Wyatt gave fans the faintest tease for what is coming next in the franchise. When discussing the spin-off starring Green Lantern Jessica Cruz, Wyatt confirmed that their take on the Green Lantern Corps was taking inspiration from another anime that ran around the same time as Dragon Ball Z on Toonami.

“Our take on Superman is very obviously inspired by Dragon Ball Z, among other things; there’s a lot of anime influence. [My Adventures with Green Lantern] is inspired by a very different part of the same Toonami block,” he explained. “It’ll be really clear once we start dropping promos what part of the Toonami block inspired our Green Lantern show. We’re not subtle, people.”

What show is Wyatt talking about? That’s what we’re all trying to guess. With Jessica Cruz as the main character in My Adventures with Green Lantern, two potential answers come to mind: Sailor Moon, which ran alongside the initial run of Dragon Ball Z on Toonami, and YuYu Hakusho, which started airing on the block while DBZ was still running on Toonami in reruns. Both work thematically; casting Cruz as an upstart delinquent still getting to grips with her powers has plenty of YuYu Hakusho vibes, while we will die happy if they give every Green Lantern a magical girl transformation. Yes, even Guy Gardner.

In fact, especially Guy Gardner.

My Adventures with Superman Season 3 airs on Toonami and HBO Max starting June 13, 2026 at midnight.
