When the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Disney+ show was announced, fans of Rick Riordan's work hoped that it would be a faithful adaptation of the beloved book series. After all, we had two movies starring Logan Lerman that skimped over much of what made the books so compelling. Now, with one season of the show embraced by both critics and Riordan fans alike, the future looks bright for the Percy Jackson show. Ahead of season 2's release on Disney+, both the author himself and Daniel Diemer, the actor playing Percy's cyclops half-brother Tyson, addressed some changes that show has made in order to adapt The Sea of Monsters book onscreen.
Speaking to Radio Times, Riordan said, "I will say this, I think everyone on the team is very mindful of the legacy of the books and the audience and what they're expecting. So while I don't think we feel imprisoned by that, I do think that we all feel a sense of obligation and respect toward the material. So everyone's coming at it from the same point of view, which is really lovely. I mean, anytime you translate from one media to another, you have to make changes." That makes sense! After all, there are plenty of fights that take place in the open ocean in The Sea of Monsters, and a TV show is going to have a limited budget.
Despite the changes, actor Daniel Diemer offered an encouraging word to fans whose fears need to be assuaged. "Even if things are changing, the heart of the books and the heart of the characters, that remains the same. I think that's the most important part. It doesn't feel like they're trying to make something that's their own. It all has to do with putting together an entire show. But they're trying to keep the heart and soul of Percy Jackson very, very much alive throughout. I think if that's the priority for the fans, then they're going to be very, very happy," Diemer said.
One aspect from The Sea of Monsters has been confirmed for season 2 of the show, though: the epic chariot race at Camp Half-Blood. If that doesn't get you onboard, I don't know what will.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 will hit Netflix on December 10, 2025.
With it's Olympian return to Disney+ for season 2, there's never been a better time to be a Percy Jackson fan.
