Battlestar Galactica's Cylons are being created now by Elon Musk says Adama himself Edward James Olmos, calling it an "ugly reality"

Elon Musk is creating the Cylons of the future, according to Battlestar Galactica star Edward James Olmos (and that's a bad thing, to make it clear)

At the heart of the early '00s run of Battlestar Galactica was a story about man versus machine, literally — with the remnants of humanity fleeing the onslaught of the robot Cylons and having to come to terms with their creations now seeking their utter destruction after crossing the line from artificial intelligence to something approaching actual life. Of course, back in 2003 when the reboot of the '70s sci-fi classic debuted, that still felt like a science fiction concept that was some distance from coming true — and today, it might play a little differently.

That’s something that the series’ lead, Edward James Olmos, feels very passionately about, as revealed during a recent public appearance talking about the show.

“This program means more today. If you haven’t seen it in a while, look at it again — you’ll be unbelievably moved by the fact that it’s become a reality with Elon [Musk] making 1 billion toasters right as we speak,” Olmos said during an appearance at Rose City Comic Con 2025. For those who didn’t watch BSG, ‘toasters’ was the pejorative slang term humans used for the Cylons; it was the clanker of its day.

“We’re all going to have these robots inside, in our living room, they’ll be doing your windows, they’ll be in chairs that take care of your kids, they’re going to be picking food out in the field, they’re going to be washing card and doing everything,” the actor, who played Admiral Adama on the series, continued.

“So if you watch our program, you’re going to realize that [series creator and showrunner] Ron Moore was really, really right on the money. Even the last time I saw him, a few months ago, he even said [that] it’s sad that my reality has come true. It’s an ugly reality.”

Of course, we’re still not at the point of AI disguising itself as beautiful blonde terrorists or committing genocide to make a point, but who knows: maybe we’re closer than anyone other than Olmos currently believes.
