Set primarily on Earth, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy rethinks what a Star Trek series can be

Star Trek is all about exploring unknown worlds, but the latest series will be sticking a bit closer to home. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which premieres January 15 on Paramount +, will have lots of scenes in San Francisco. Nahla Ake actor Holly Hunter says there will still be plenty of action in space, but she appreciates the series feeling more earthbound, as it makes things seem more exotic.
“The fact that the show is Starfleet Academy, it’s a school and we are also in space, so we’re taking all these students into unknown territory for any of us,” Starfleet Academy actor Holly Hunter tells Popverse’s Ashley Victoria Robinson at New York Comic Con 2025.
“I mean, there are unknown entities. All those encounters are kind of incredible to be subjecting to, and at the same time, that is what they’re entitled to, that is what they want. That’s what the story is about. And at the same time, we’re in San Francisco, so it’s got this earthbound exotic combination that I think is really unusual even for Star Trek.”
