The Star Trek spinoff Starfleet Academy is as much a school on-screen as it is off, according to co-star George Hawkins

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s George Hawkins says the show is somewhat meta, as the younger cast members and learning and absorbing from the veteran actors

Class is in session, but this is no ordinary school. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is an upcoming series that focuses on a new class of Starfleet cadets. Premiering on Paramount+ on January 15, the series will follow the students as they learn the ins and outs of piloting ships, exploring alien worlds, and all the chaos and creation that comes with Star Trek.

However, there’s somewhat of a meta nature to the series. According to Darem Reymi actor George Hawkins, the cast sometimes feel like they’re in school, since they’re surrounded by veteran actors such as Paul Giamatti and Holly Hunter. In that sense, the show has been somewhat of a teaching hospital for them, and they loved every minute.

“It has everything, especially for the young actors. It has everything for us,” Starfleet Academy actor George Hawkins tells Popverse’s Ashley Victoria Robinson at New York Comic Con 2025. “We get to watch rock stars like Paul [Giamatti] and Holly [Hunter] work at the top of the industry, and we just sit and absorb. That is such a blessing, and doing it for Star Trek, where it’s a franchise that cares so much about people, it cares so much about progress, growth, and purpose. And we get to be the custodians of that. We’re blessed. That’s it.”
