Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finally warps back onto screens this summer as Paramount+ announces a July release date for the long-awaited third season

It's been almost two years since that season 2 Gorn cliffhanger, but this July, we'll find out how it all ends up

After almost two years, the crew of the USS Enterprise is finally ready to embark on its next mission — Paramount+ has announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will return to the streaming platform this summer with a confirmed July release date.

The third season will begin July 17 with a two episode premiere, with new episodes following weekly until a September 11 season finale. That won’t be the end of the show, however; it’s already been renewed for a fourth season, currently in production. Does this mean we won’t have to wait 23 months for a cliffhanger resolution like we did between seasons 2 and 3…? We can only hope. (How is that Gorn showdown going to end up, anyway…?)

All of the primary cast are returning for this new season, with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn all signing back up for duty; also returning are guest stars Carol Kane and Paul Wesley, with new guest stars for the third season including Patton Oswalt and Our Flag Means Death Star Rhys Darby.

According to Paramount, the new season “takes characters both new and beloved to new heights, and dives into thrilling adventures of faith, duty, romance, comedy, and mystery, with varying genres never before seen on any other Star Trek.” Considering that the second season already brought in Star Trek’s first-ever musical episode, it’ll be interesting to see what genres the show is playing with this time around…!

The release date announcement was accompanied by new key art for the season, showing the colorful cast boldly going on a similarly colorful planet: take a look below.
