Star Trek: Voyager star Robert Picardo reveals the secret behind his performance: his “resting bitch face”

At Florida Supercon 2025, Star Trek: Voyager's Doctor himself, Robert Picardo, shared what his children believe to be the secret ingredient of his performance on the show

The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager went through tremendous character growth across the seven years that the show was running on CBS. He started out as a straightforward and impatient EMH - "emergency medical hologram" - who materialized in Med Bay barking the line, "Please state the nature of the medical emergency," to a beloved and supportive member of the Voyager crew. He even shared his love of music and dance with Seven of Nine, a former Borg drone.

At Florida Supercon 2025, Robert Picardo, who played the Doctor on the show, shared an observation that his own children made about his performance. "My children, finally, when they grew up, they told me the secret to my success in the role is my 'resting bitch face.' Because when my face is at rest, I look a little surly and unapproachable, ask my children. They were used to me smiling all the time, over their changing tables. So when the show premiered, my 4 and a half year old daughter, Gina, who is now 33, she said, 'Daddy's so mad [in Voyager], why he so mad,'" Picardo said.

With that in mind, I think I need a Star Trek panel one day where actors share stories of what their toddlers' reactions were to seeing them in character for the first time, because Picardo's daughter's reaction is priceless.

If you remember in Star Trek: The Original Series, DeForest Kelley frequently expressed consternation by raising his eyebrows, or just conveying a sense of fury through his eyes in general. The Doctor, in early episodes of Voyager, just looked perpetually annoyed with the crew for summoning him on a sporadic basis. As the seasons progressed and the Doctor got a mobile emitter that allowed him to travel around Voyager beyond Med Bay, Picardo got to show a bit more emotional range on the show.
