You simply can't keep Sophie Turner away from being a badass, nor Phoebe Waller-Bridge away from archeological thrillers. Want proof? How about Amazon MGM Studios' blockbuster announcement (made September 3) that the duo - who made their bones with Game of Thrones and Fleabag, respectively - are teaming up to bring the massively popular Tomb Raider franchise to the small screen? That's right gang, Waller-Bridge will serve as creator, writer, executive producer for an all-new series, and Turner will star as lara Croft herself.
The announcement comes from Amazon MGM Studios' own social media, which revealed the involvement of not only Turner and Waller-Bridge, but also revealed the series director, Shōgun's Jonathan Van Tulleken, and co-showrunner, Wayward Pines's Chad Hodge. Both Van Tulleken and Hodge will also serve as executive producers alongside Waller-Bridge.
Much like the tombs which Lara is so good at raiding, however, there's a whole lot about this series that is still shrouded in mystery. A release date, for example, has not been revealed, not has the series's plot - whether that will be a whole new story or one taken directly from the games. We can, however, point out that this won't be the only dive into the franchise from a major streaming platform in recent memory - the animated Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, starring Hayley Atwell as the series lead, is currently streaming on Netflix.
That said, Popverse does our own croft-style investigations (well, maybe not as badass), and we'll be letting you know any info on Amazon's Tomb Raider series as we uncover it.
