If you've been on Popverse within the past 24 hours, you'll probably recall our reporting on the fact that Amazon Prime Video's new live-action Tomb Raider series had cast its Lara Croft and set its head writer/showrunner (those were Sophie Turner and Phoebe Waller-Bridge, respectively). Now, we've got more Tomb Raider news for you, but it's not exactly the good kind. Netflix has announced that its own animated Tomb Raider series, The Legend of Lara Croft, will be ending after its upcoming second season.
The news comes from Variety in an article published September 4. And let us be perfectly up front with you from the jump, at no point in the article does Variety make the case that Netflix's choice is because of Prime Video's announcement. Yes, the timing is enough to make a reasonable person raise an eyebrow and wonder, but we'll remind you that Prime Video had been planning on making a live-action Tomb Raider series all the way back in 2023 (per The Hollywood Reporter). This makes it harder to swallow that Netflix's decision is in direct correlation to Prime Video's announcement, and since apparently neither Netflix or Amazon own the exclusive TV rights for the franchise, it's difficult to make the case that this comes out of any legal issues.
All that speculation aside, though, we did get some confirmed details out of the Variety post, particularly the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft season 2 release date, which fans will be thrilled to hear is coming before the year is out. Specifically, archeological adventurists can expect to hear Hayley Atwell voicing Laura Croft again December 11.
Bittersweetly, for the last time.
The Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft season 2 plot synopsis also showed up in this most recent announcement, and reads as follows:
"When adventurer Lara Croft (voiced by Hayley Atwell) discovers a trail of stolen African Orisha masks, she joins forces with her best friend Sam (Karen Fukuhara) to retrieve the precious artifacts. Lara’s thrilling new adventure takes her around the globe as she delves deeper into the hidden secrets of Orisha history, dodging the machinations of a dangerous and enigmatic billionaire who wants the masks for herself, while discovering these relics contain dark secrets and a power that defies logic. Power that may, in fact, be divine."
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft comes to Netflix December 11.
