The Yu Yu Hakusho live-action series is for mature audiences, warns Netflix

There's more than just intense fights in this one.

The long-anticipated Yu Yu Hakusho live-action series from Netflix finally arrives next month. If you're curious about the tone and intensity levels of this seemingly serious take on the famous manga and anime series, make sure to check out everything we know about the age ratings in the US and UK here. Read on below.

What rating is the Yu Yu Hakusho series in the US?

Yu Yu Hakusho is rated TV-MA in the US. This corresponds to the MPA's R rating for movies. Programs with this rating are generally not suitable for people or individuals under 17. Netflix's details on the rating for Yu Yu Hakusho in the US mention strong violence and use of tobacco, but it's reasonable to also expect coarse language and even some scary sequences depending on how it deals with demons and the supernatural.

What rating is the Yu Yu Hakusho series in the UK?

Yu Yu Hakusho is rated 15 in the UK. According to the BBFC, this type of video content is suitable only for persons aged 15 or over. It's equivalent to the MPA's R rating in the United States. Netflix's details on the rating for Yu Yu Hakusho in the UK mentions suicide, violence, and injury detail. Given what we saw in the first trailer for the series and what we know about the source material, this sounds logical. Of course, you should also expect the coarse language and use of tobacco as described by the markers in the US site for the show.

What rating is the original Yu Yu Hakusho anime?

Like with many other animes, the age ratings for the original Yu Yu Hakusho anime (1992-1995) are all over the place. This is the result of extensive tinkering with the domestic releases and broadcasts in each territory. For example, in the UK, the DVD releases hovered around the 12 rating, but the syndication airings hit the 15 mark. In the US, Funimation and Toonami airings were rated TV-PG and TV-Y7 respectively, cutting out all the mature and harsh stuff. Later, the Adult Swim airings went as high as TV-14. All in all, and no matter which version of the anime you've seen, Netflix's live-action series appears to be much darker and serious in tone.
