It doesn’t matter how far across the galaxy you travel. You’ll never escape your grief.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a comic about grief, revenge, sisterhood, and forgiveness. The eight issue limited series, written by Tom King and penciled by Bilquis Evely, follows Supergirl across the galaxy as she helps a young girl named Ruthye hunt for the space pirate who kills her father. Along the way, the two women visit strange worlds, meet exotic aliens, and learn a few things about grief, vengeance, and letting go.

The 2021 comic book was nominated for Eisner Award for Best Limited Series. It also serves as the basis for the 2026 DC Studios film, which is directed by Craig Gillespie and stars Milly Alcock as Supergirl. If you’re curious about the comic book that inspired the upcoming film, or want to make sense of its ending, Popverse has you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

How does Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow end?

Supergirl and Ruthye Marye Knoll succeed in capturing Krem of the Yellow Hills, but Ruthye is surprised that she’s unable to kill him. Supergirl, however, is angered by the loss of her friend Comet, and still reeling with the trauma of losing Krypton, which drives her to almost kill Krem herself. Kara reveals that she had brought Ruthye along on her odyssey to try and teach her that vengeance isn’t the answer, but now she no longer cares.

Ruthye tells Supergirl that her message did get through to her and convinces her to spare Krem. Instead of killing him, the two women banish him to the Phantom Zone. An epilogue picks up the story 300 years later, where Supergirl (who looks middle-aged thanks to her Kryptonian biology) meets up with an elderly Ruthye. The two free Krem, who has just finished serving his 300 year sentence. The former pirate is repentant, apologizing to Ruthye for all the pain he’s caused her. Ruthye responds by whacking him in the head with her cane, as she and Supergirl walk off thinking about all they’ve learned.

Who dies in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow begins with Ruthye’s father Elias Knoll being murdered by Krem. Later in the story, we see Supergirl’s parents (and the people of Argo City) die during a flashback to Kara’s childhood. One of the story’s most tragic moments occurs during the final battle, when Comet the Super-Horse dies after taking a Kryptonite bullet meant for Supergirl.

Does Krypto die in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

No, Krypto doesn’t die in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but the book gives us plenty of reasons to worry about him. Krypto is shot with a poisoned arrow in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1, and we’re told that Krem is the only one who knows about an antidote that could save him.

It turns out Supergirl made that up.

Yes, Krem did shoot Krypto with a poisoned arrow, but the canine quickly recovered thanks to some space-veterinarians. Kara had made Krypto’s situation seem more dire as a pretense for her and Ruthye to hunt Krem across the galaxy. Kara was hoping to show Ruthye that vengeance wasn’t the answer, and she knew simply telling her wouldn’t be enough.

Krypto is seen in the flashforward epilogue, which takes place 300 years in the future. This means that not only did Krypto survive, but he got to live for another three centuries.

Do any other DC Universe characters appear in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

Aside from Supergirl, the only established DC Universe characters that appear in Woman of Tomorrow are Krypto the Superdog and Comet the Super-Horse. Kara’s parents Zor-El and Alura also appear during a flashback to the final days of Argo City. Other than that, no major DC Universe characters appear. This is due to the story being set in another galaxy, far from Earth and all of its familiar characters.

Is Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

No, Lobo was not in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Tom King, who wrote the original miniseries, says his original pitch included Lobo. King envisioned the series as a Supergirl/Lobo team-up, with Lobo as the more experienced player. King’s editors suggested they swap the roles, making Supergirl the veteran hero against a more naïve character. In response, Tom King created Ruthye, changing the direction of the story.

Lobo will be in the 2026 film adaptation, where he’ll be played by former Aquaman actor Jason Momoa. However, his role will be different than what King initially envisioned when he pitched the miniseries. Either way, it’s sure to be a fun time.

How closely does the Supergirl movie follow Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

As of this writing it’s hard to say since the movie isn’t out yet. There are moments from the trailer that make it look like the film will closely follow the comic, such as the scene where Krem shoots Krypto and Kara’s Argo flashback. However, we also know the film will be adding Lobo, who wasn’t in the original comic. If we had to make a guess, it’s safe to say it will follow the comic closely but deviate in a few places.

Is there a sequel to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

No, there is no sequel to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The 8-issue miniseries tells a self-contained story with a definitive ending. Ruthye and Krem haven’t been seen since, aside from a flashback cameo in Action Comics #1077.

Kara Zor-El has continued her adventures across the DC Universe, which includes a new Supergirl comic that was launched in 2025. You can technically consider that series a sequel to Woman of Tomorrow, as it’s the first time Kara has headlined a comic since the miniseries. However, the 2025 Supergirl series is written by a different creative team, and doesn’t continue any of the characters or concepts introduced in Woman of Tomorrow.

Does Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow set up the next DC Universe story?

Not really. As we said in the previous section, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a self-contained story set away from Earth. It doesn’t set up the next DC Universe event, but it has a compelling storyline.

Where can I read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a popular comic book, making it fairly easy to find. You can probably find the eight individual issues at your local comic book shop. The storyline was also collected as a trade paperback collection (or graphic novel) which is available at most book retailers, and online shops like Amazon. The complete storyline can also be read digitally on DC Universe Infinite, DC’s digital subscription service (think of it like Netflix for comics).
