Marvel has deputized Deadpool as its top star (Sorry, Spider-Man!) for a rare crossover with DC Comics opposite Batman

This year will see big names from both Marvel and DC work on two Deadpool and Batman crossovers - and more

It was teased back in February, but now it’s official: DC and Marvel are crossing over this year — in comic book form, at least — with two one-off issues pairing DC’s biggest hero with Marvel’s… well, Marvel’s wackiest, I guess. Coming this September, Marvel’s Deadpool/Batman #1, with DC’s Batman/Deadpool #1 following in November. And that’s just the beginning, as it turns out.

The real story might not be in the fact that the two companies are collaborating on new comic books for the first time since 2004’s JLA/Avengers #4, but in the people responsible for bringing the comic books to fans. Zeb Wells — who co-wrote Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine, and is no stranger to the Merc with a Mouth — is writing the Marvel effort with art from Greg Capullo, who was a mainstay on DC’s main Batman comic from 2011 through 2016. DC, meanwhile, is bringing back none other than Grant Morrison to write its contribution, but Justice League Unlimited and Superman artist (and his Klaus co-creator) Dan Mora illustrating.

“I don't do many comics these days but there was no way I could turn down the chance to work with Dan Mora again, one of my all-time favorite artistic collaborators — and definitely no way I could turn down Batman and Deadpool! Expect 4th wall-busting mayhem, owls, blood, blades, and at least one giant typewriter!” exclaimed Morrison — whose back catalog includes celebrated runs on JLA, Batman, New X-Men, and Action Comics in addition to creator-owned projects like The Invisibles and Seaguy; they’ve been in quasi-comic book retirement since 2021’s Superman and the Authority — in a statement released to Entertainment Weekly.

The September and November issues won’t exist in a vacuum, according to the publishers; a second crossover will be published in 2026, and the Deadpool/Batman specials will also feature additional stories featuring other Marvel/DC mash-ups from creators yet to be named.

"Anyone that's working in comics today grew up with a Marvel, DC crossover at some moment in their reading timeline history," DC publisher and president Jim Lee told EW. "I think once you become a creator, you want to work on the biggest characters for both companies, but then to be able to do something that only happens every 15, 20 years, it is something you don't want to pass up. So I think fans are going to see a lot of interesting projects from their favorite creators. That's all I can say."

Deadpool/Batman #1 will be released September 17, with DC’s Batman/Deadpool following in November. And then...? Well, that remains to be seen — but how soon before Ryan Reynolds' fourth wall-breaking Deadpool starts making references to it all on the big screen?
