When a creative person is having fun, they usually produce their best work. Now, picking out the “best” work by Frank Miller is a challenge simply because of how deep and influential his catalogue has been. However, it is hard to argue that the Daredevil Born Again arc isn’t up there among the other great comics he has written, and it comes down to his admiration for David Mazzucchelli’s art and the fun he had delving deep into Daredevil’s character.
“I remember having the time of my life,” Frank Miller told us when we asked him about his memories of writing Daredevil and, specifically, the Born Again arc. The first issue of this iconic storyline was published in February 1986. In it, the Kingpin learns that Daredevil’s secret identity is none other than Matt Murdock and makes it his personal mission to destroy the attorney’s life and reputation. It sees Murdock nearly broken before he rebuilds his life and manages to finally put a dent in Kingpin’s reputation.
“I wrote naturally and swiftly. David [Mazzucchelli] proved himself to be such a visual dramatist that I found I could delve deeper into the characters and put Matt Murdock through emotional paces that I’d never put him through before.”
Together, the partnership of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli produced one of the most important runs in Daredevil’s history, with Mazzucchelli’s art helping Miller push the character further before he proved his resilience in the end. While Matt Murdock certainly isn’t having a great time in the Daredevil Born Again storyline, it is clear that Miller is, and that might be what makes it such a good read.
