Before he redefined Batman and Daredevil, comic book legend Frank Miller says there's one piece of advice he wish he'd been told sooner
Having the guts to stick to your unique vision is something that even Frank Miller had to learn while working in comics.

Throughout his long career in comics, Frank Miller has created some of the most memorable visuals and influential takes on established characters. His portrayal of Batman in The Dark Knight Returns inspired a whole generation of future comic book writers and filmmakers over the years, and he helped define Daredevil’s character for Marvel. As you might expect from someone with such a unique style, both in his art and in his writing, his biggest piece of advice to people is to be true to themselves.
We chatted to Frank Miller earlier this year and asked him what piece of advice he wished he’d been given when he started his career in comics. His answer was simple but no less impactful.
“Don’t try to be fashionable," Miller tells Popverse. "Be true.”
Which is probably easier for someone like Miller, who has titles like 300 and Sin City in his catalogue to display his style and ambition. However, that willingness to do something different, even if it might not be popular, is currently helping DC with the incredible sales of its Absolute Batman line of comics. Chasing their vision, rather than trends, is a lesson that the company could have learned from Frank Miller during his time there.
Of course, this isn’t the only piece of advice that Frank Miller has for budding comic book artists and writers. His upcoming memoir, Push The Wall: My Life, Writing, Drawing, and the Art of Storytelling, not only recounts how his life experience has informed his art and offers key insight into his writing and creating process. It hits shelves on July 14, 2026.
