Rob Liefeld has one hell of a life story, starting in the comic industry as a teenager, becoming a celebrity outside of comics, co-founding Image Comics, and remaining a foremost presence for decades. He sold a high-profile tell-all memoir a few years back, but just recently canceled it... but he says it's not over. Not because there's not good stuff, but that he can't say it just yet.
"I do. I'm gonna go back," Liefeld says when asked if he's got an autobiography in the works during his spotlight panel at Comic-Con International San Diego 2026. "I saw Mick Jagger - what is with Mick Jagger? - he's on 60 Minutes a year ago and they're like, 'Why haven't you, you're Mick Jagger, written an autobiography?' And he said, you know, 'I think the minute I look back, I'm not looking forward.' And I'm like, 'I can't be looking back! I gotta go forward!'"
"So right before I die, I'll tell you all the good stuff," he continues. I'll invite you over. I was younger, and I'm like, I'm too young. They were throwing me a pretty good deal. I had to give all the signing money back, but I'm like, I can't write it. I'm too young. And like I said, Mick Jagger isn't writing one, and I am. That's weird."
Since the '80s, Liefeld has risen to the heights of the comic industry, becoming one of the most well-known and enduring artists of all time with an idiosyncratic style that came to typify the aesthetic and excess of the most popular comics of the '90s. Still, we may be waiting a while to hear all the juicy details of Liefeld's unique life in comics as he is showing no sign of slowing down, with his bombastic personality rarely skipping a beat.
Some of Liefeld's biggest creations, Cable and X-Force, are currently part of the smash hit animated series X-Men '97.
