Step aside, Christopher Nolan: Prime Video orders Lore Olympus, WEBTOON's viral Greek mythology adaptation

Lore Olympus, the romantic reimagining of Hades & Persephone by Rachel Smythe, began as comic on Tumblr in 2017. Now, Prime Video is betting on its mythological rise

And you thought The Odyssey was gonna be the big Greek myth this year.

Well, Olympian fans, guess again. Lore Olympus, Rachel Smythe's smash-hit webcomic that retells the story of Persephone and Hades and broke new ground on the platform WEBTOON, is headed to Prime Video as an animated series. Per Variety, Willow and The Winchesters scribe Julia Cooperman will serve as showrunner, while The Jim Henson Company comes aboard as producer.

"My fascination with Greek mythology," said Cooperman in a statement, "has spanned grade-school libraries and college seminars. Reading Lore Olympus, I was reminded of the enduring power of these tales, which echo through so much of our modern-day storytelling. We can’t wait to share this frisky, soulful, and timely reimagining of Persephone and Hades’ story with new audiences and longtime readers alike."

While Cooperman's interest may lie in the power of storytelling, we have to imagine that Amazon's MGM Studio was also pretty fascinated by the near-mythic fandom the series has built up. Two years after it launched on WEBTOON (having originally started life on Rachel Smythe's Tumblr), Lore Olympus was reported to have reached 299 million views by 2020 (per Comic Book Resources), making it the most popular webcomic at that point in the platform's history. Currently, the webcomic is behind a paid tier for interested viewers, but the number of readers continues to grow - as of this writing, it's responsible for a total 1.4 billion views.

Think Matt Damon in Wonder Woman armor will rack up those kinds of numbers? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
