The Marvel Universe is populated by mutants, and some are more powerful than others. While some mutants are handy in a fight, Omega-Level mutants are practically gods, with some having the ability to reshape the world. What makes someone an Omega-Level mutant, and how many are there? And which ones are the strongest? Let’s dive in and meet some of Marvel’s powerful characters.

What is an Omega-Level mutant?

An Omega-Level mutant is the most powerful of all the mutant classifications. While Alpha-Level mutants are powerful enough to enslave entire planets, some Omega-Level mutants have the ability to reshape the fabric of reality. While not all Omega-Level mutants are as omnipotent as that, most of them could easily wipe out another race without batting an eye.

An Omega-Level mutant is a mutant who has what would be considered unlimited power. For example, Storm could spend weeks or days conjuring hurricanes without running out of energy. Think of it like a weapon where the ammo never runs out. If a mutant has powers that work that way, they might be an Omega-Level mutant.

Some mutants have multiple powers, and it’s possible for one of their powers to be Omega-Level while another power has a lower classification. For example, Jean Grey has telepathic powers and telekinetic powers, but only her telepathic powers are considered Omega-Level. It’s also possible for a mutant at a lower classification to grow more powerful and become an Omega-Level mutant.

Now that you know what an Omega-Level mutant is, let’s break down who the Omega-Level mutants. For full disclosure, the answer isn’t always consistent. Some writers will classify a character as an Omega-Level mutant, while another writer says they aren’t. For example, House of X #1 contains a list of what is supposed to be all known Omega-Level mutants, but some characters who were previously classified as Omega-Level mutants, like Emma Frost, are missing from the list.

This is because Marvel had a looser definition of what it meant to be an Omega-Level mutant prior to the Krakoan era. Prior to Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men run, the Omega-Level classification was used arbitrarily by some writers and sometimes used interchangeably with Alpha-Level mutant. House of X #1 redefined what an Omega-Level mutant is, giving clarity and consistency to the classification going forward.

Because House of X #1 “rebooted” the classification, this list only covers mutants who were identified as Omega-Level mutants after the Krakoa era began. Trust me, it’s better this way. The original draft of this list attempted to include the mutants who were called Omega-Level when the classification was less defined, and this guide became filled with contradictions and things spiraled out of control.

This list focuses on the comic books and doesn’t include Omega-Level mutants identified in television or movies. To avoid redundancies, this list doesn’t include multiverse variants. In other words, if one version of Storm is an Omega-Level mutant, it’s safe to assume the other versions in the multiverse are as well.

Ranking Marvel’s Omega-Level mutants from least powerful to most powerful

37 - Lycaon

Lycaon is basically a werewolf with two heads. If X-Men: Red #11 (2023) hadn’t classified him as an Omega-Level mutant, I wouldn’t have believed it.

36 - Maggott (Japheth)

Maggott has two slugs in his digestive system, which turn the things he eats into power. As a result, Japheth has enhanced speed, strength, and durability and can alter his size at will.

35 - Kobak

Kobak has sharp claws and can shoot quills from his body. His spines can supposedly penetrate anything. It’s a cool power, but I’m surprised he’s classified as an Omega-Level mutant.

34 -Lodus Logos

Lodus Logos can create an unlimited amount of metal in any shape or size.

33 - Orrdon

Orrdon could launch himself like a rocket, infinitely accelerating until he hit something. The further he goes, the more powerful his impact is. Orrdon claims that he’s invulnerable while he’s accelerating. A deadly mutant, unless you’re in a small room.

32 - Krakoan (Julian Keller)

Julian is a powerful telekinetic who can move objects with his mind. It’s a useful power, but telekinetics are a dime a dozen on this list, so Julian doesn’t get a high spot.

31 - Sobunar

Sobunar can manipulate water and knows what’s happening in the oceans he’s created at all times.

30 - War

War can conjure and manipulate fire, using the flames to replace weapons and even replace her severed body parts. She’s dangerous, but as long as you can withstand some heat, she isn’t a problem.

29 - Exodus (Bennet du Paris)

Bennet is the most powerful telekinetic in the Marvel Universe. He can use his powers to move any object, regardless of its size, make himself stronger, and create water out of thin air. It’s an impressive power, but not nearly as impressive as the other mutants on this list.

28 - Idyll III

Idyll III has the power to see the future, but she is unable to change it. In other words, if she sees a vision of herself being destroyed by the other mutants on this list, there’s nothing to stop it from happening.

27 - Idyll

The predecessor to Idyll III, Idyll has precognitive powers, giving him visions of the future. A great power to avoid trouble, but it won’t do much good in combat.

26 - Pestilence

Pestilence can infect her enemies with her poisoned arrows. A deadly ability, but it pales in comparison to many other Omega-Level mutants.

25 - Uqesh

Uqesh can summon gods, even if they don’t wish to appear. I would place him higher in this ranking, but there’s no guarantee that a god is going to do what you want them to do after summoning them. Plus, anyone with Thor’s phone number could do the same thing.

24 - Xilo

An insect collective that has lived for over 2 billion years, Xilo can merge with planets and terraform their environment. Xilo also has the ability to physically merge with other mutants and use their powers.

23 - Jaden

Jaden can conjure and manipulate nuclear energy. Many of Marvel’s mutants can’t be harmed by nuclear energy, but it’s still a dangerous power that can devastate anything from a room full of enemies to an entire civilization.

22 - Genesis

Genesis can control all plant life. At times, she uses plants to act as spies; other times, she uses her abilities to turn an enemy’s microscopic fungi against them, killing them instantly.

21 - Forge

Forge is a technopath who can build and understand any machine for any purpose. Beyond that, his powers give him the mind of a master tactician, allowing him to anticipate conflicts and obstacles before they happen. One of his greatest feats was experimenting on himself, which leveled his powers up to Omega-Level.

20 - Iceman (Bobby Drake)

Iceman can manipulate moisture to create unlimited supplies of ice or water. Since the planet is filled with moisture, Iceman has a lot to work with. Iceman can manipulate temperatures and has even been able to freeze the fires of Hell. Bobby can also transfer his consciousness into his ice structures, making him almost immortal.

19 - Lactuca

Lactuca can teleport, become undetectable, increase her size, fly, and manipulate the cosmos. It was tough to rank her because the limits of her powers haven’t been fully explored, but from what we’ve seen, she’s one tough customer.

18 - Famine

Famine can control water, create huge typhoons, and even drain the water from living beings, causing them to instantly die of dehydration.

17 - Proteus (Kevin MacTaggert)

Proteus can manipulate the molecules around him, essentially reshaping reality. His powers almost seem like magic, but they come with limits. Using his powers quickly burns out Kevin’s body, forcing him to find a new host. A deadly ability, but it has some guardrails.

16 - Monarch (Jamie Braddock)

Like Proteus, Monarch has the ability to reshape reality, but it doesn’t burn through his body the way it does with Kevin. He also has the power to manipulate time and create alternate realities.

15 - Death

Death has a deadly stare that can reduce his enemies to ashes. Whatever you do, stay out of his sightline.

14 - Tarn

Tarn can manipulate DNA, which he uses to depower mutants and give other mutants new powers.

13 - Storm (Orono Munroe)

If you think the only thing Storm can do is control the weather, you’re sadly mistaken. In recent years, Orono has powered up, and she can now make constructs out of lightning, creating weapons that can harm Earth’s most powerful magic users.

12 - Mister M (Absalon Mercator)

Mister M can manipulate matter on a subatomic level. He can remove the oxygen from another person’s body, create new lifeforms out of thin air, create weapons and energy blasts, and phase through matter. Oh, and his mind can’t be controlled by any psychic mutants.

10 - Kid Omega (Quentin Quire)

Kid Omega is a powerful telepath, but let’s face it, this ranking is full of them. His powers supposedly rival Jean Grey’s, otherwise he would have a lower spot on this list.

9 - Nameless

Nameless is a skilled mimic who could copy the appearance and the powers of other mutants.

8 - Elixir (Joshua Foley)

Elixir can control biological structures. In other words, he can heal his body, the bodies of his allies, and the bodies of his enemies. He can inflict diseases, and in some cases, instantly kill his enemies. He also has the power to resurrect dead people. In fact, Joshua used his powers to revive all 16 million fallen Genosha mutants at once, reversing a genocide. He can also resurrect himself, making him a hard mutant to beat.

7 - Legion (David Haller)

David can create new mutations, which he assigns to each of his multiple personalities. According to X-Men: Legacy #5 (2013), he has over 200 Omega-Level personas with their own powers. This was before Omega-Level was reclassified during the Krakoan era, but that’s still impressive.

6 - Charles Xavier

Charles Xavier is the founder of the X-Men and one of the most powerful minds in the Marvel Universe. His telepathic powers are so great that I’m amazed he wasn’t classified as an Omega-Level mutant until 2025. Xavier can project himself into other people as far as 250 miles away. Xavier can rewrite the human brain, steal information from other minds, transfer himself into another body, create deadly mental blasts, and more.

5 - Jean Grey

Jean Grey is one of the most powerful telepaths in the Marvel Universe. She can read minds, rewrite minds, lobotomize enemies, alter their emotions, create illusions, and more. To be clear, this ranking isn’t counting Jean’s time with the Phoenix Force, as that’s another entity and not part of her natural mutant powers. Either way, even without the godlike Phoenix Force, Jean is easily one of the most powerful Omega-Level mutants.

4 - Magneto (Erik Lehnsherr)

Magneto has mastery over all forms of magnetism, which he uses to create force fields, fly, generate deadly blasts, manipulate the molecules in his enemies’ bodies, and survive deep space without oxygen. He has raised islands, terraformed planets, and can use his powers from a great distance. In Uncanny X-Men #521, Magneto was able to use his powers on a giant bullet that was many light-years away. Magneto has been described as the most powerful mutant on Earth, and while this list disagrees with that assessment, he’s pretty close.

3 - Vulcan (Gabriel Summers)

Vulcan has the power to manipulate and harness all forms of energy, creating blasts, shields, and weapons. I was originally going to give him a lower spot in this ranking, until further digging showed me just how vast his powers are. His energy powers let him override the electrical current of other mutants' brains, stripping them of their powers. He was once able to suppress Jean Grey’s telepathic powers, and Jean is one of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel Universe. That’s pretty impressive.

2 - Hope Summers

Hope has the power to copy the abilities of other mutants. She can also boost the powers of nearby mutants, which comes in handy during team battles. When Hope copies another mutant’s powers, she has instant control and mastery of it. However, the powers fade over time, distance, and heavy usage.

1 - Isca

Isca’s Omega-Level power is the ability to snatch victory from any situation. This means that she always wins, whether it’s in combat, a bet, a vote, or any type of matchup. The power borders on magic, giving Isca the talent or skills needed to win whatever matchup she’s in. Sometimes the powers cause improbable things to happen, which wind up working in Isca’s favor. This can be weaponized against her, like the time she was tricked into a bet that caused her lover Tarn to die. The power doesn’t leave Isca immune from death, as she admits that there is victory in death at times. Still, even with its limits, it’s a power that is hard to top.

How we came up with our ranking

Storm & the Brotherhood of Mutants

Our ranking was based on each mutant’s power level, not how interesting they are as a character. For example, I personally find Storm to be a more interesting character than Magneto, but I placed Magneto higher in the ranking based on my belief that his powers would allow him to beat Storm. I realize that power levels fluctuate based on the writer and the needs of the story, but this ranking assumes each character is at their highest possible level based on previous comics. And like all rankings, there is some personal opinion in there. If you disagree with our ranking, feel free to post your own, because that’s part of the fun.

Aren’t there some Omega-Level mutants missing from this list?

You might be wondering why mutants like Emma Frost or Nate Grey are missing from our ranking. This is because the definition of Omega-Level mutant has changed since the Krakoa era began. Prior to that, the Omega-Level mutant classification was used without much consistency. House of X #1 more or less reset things when it came to the classification, redefining it to a select few.

It's worth noting that Franklin Richards was on the Omega-Level list in House of X #1, but the character is no longer considered a mutant (it’s complicated), so it’s hard to justify putting him in a ranking for mutants. Phoenix Force, while overpowered, is a cosmic entity, not a mutant. Scarlet Witch was once considered a mutant, but that’s no longer the case. However, as with all things in the Marvel Universe, it only takes one writer to retcon things.
