It’s Labor Day weekend, which means after this we can only wear white if we accept that all rules of fashion are imaginary and the best clothes to wear are the ones that make us feel good. It’s also a sign that the seasons are changing as ever, and we should start planning for more evenings inside away from cold and unpleasant weather. But that’s a good thing, as it means you get to watch and read more things in the comfort of your own space — and that’s Popverse Playlist’s whole bag, baby!

If you only watch one show this week, then it really has to be… Star Trek

You might not be aware of this, but Star Trek celebrates its 60th anniversary on September 8, six full decades after ‘The Man Trap’ debuted on NBC. (Yes, ‘The Man Trap’ was chosen to be the first episode to air, despite not being the show at its best; maybe it was simply the first episode to hand at the time.) Since then, we’ve had 12 shows — the original series, the animated series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and Starfleet Academy — and 13 theatrical movies (with one TV movie, and a series of shorts) all attempting to boldly go where our imaginations had never gone before. At its worst, it’s rarely less than diverting and entertaining, and at its best, Star Trek is American television at its best — so why not celebrate the show’s anniversary by revisiting some of your favorite episodes across the next week? Nostalgia may not be the final frontier, but it’s also not a bad way to fill some hours.

All Star Trek series are streaming on Paramount+, with the exception of Star Trek: Prodigy, which streams on Netflix.

If you only check out one movie this week, then it should be… Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger

Speaking of nostalgia, it’s wild to me that the Brothers Gallagher have not only remained so iconic in their native U.K., but somehow become accepted as the faces of a musical movement in the United States. The furore that surrounded the reunion of Oasis beyond their homeland was an amusing, surprising development for the survivor of 1990s Cool Britannia typing these words — I thought we’d all come to agree that Blur had won that particular ideological skirmish in retrospect? — but I can’t deny that I’m very, very excited to watch this behind-the-scenes documentary about said reunion, if only to pretend that it’s 30 years ago and I still had hair. (Amusingly, if your Britpop tastes lean more cerebral, indie house MUBI is screening a documentary about the Pulp reunion in US theaters September 24.)

If you can only pick up one comic this week, then make sure it’s… Legion of Super-Heroes #1

I’ll admit that I lost track of time last week when thinking about comics, and overlooked the fact that the new Legion of Super-Heroes comic from DC launched September 2. I’m a mark for this team, as the high concept — a group of super-powered teens set out to make the future a better place 1,000 years in the future — is filled with such potential in every incarnation it makes my head spin. This time around, the creative team of Joshua Williamson and Absolute Wonder Woman’s Hayden Sherman connect the future to the current DC All-In Saga, and still manage to deliver a reboot that’s as exciting, colorful, and filled with good stuff as the Legion’s been in decades. If you like superheroes, soap opera, and sci-fi, it’s a must-read; pick up a copy as soon as you can.
