If you work in Hasbro’s licensing department, then you have plenty of reasons to be excited. In 2023 Skybound Entertainment acquired licenses for Transformers and G.I. Joe and used them to launch the Energon Universe, a shared continuity for their Hasbro properties. M.A.S.K., another Hasbro property soon followed, along with Void Rivals, an original series set in the Energon Universe. The Energon Universe has been a critical and commercial success, exciting readers and retailers alike. It’s also shown Hasbro that their decision to go in business with Skybound has paid off.
“The relationship [with Hasbro] is really good,” Skybound Entertainment co-founder (and Transformers writer) Robert Kirkman says during a recent appearance on Robservations with Rob Liefeld. “They’re really thrilled with what we’ve been able to do. And I have to give credit to Ben Abernathy, Sean Mackiewicz, and Arune Singh, and the entire team at Skybound, because it’s a massive undertaking to manage a shared universe and a line of books.”
“Now that we have M.A.S.K. launching, and we’ve got four titles going, it’s expanding in some really cool ways. But yeah, it’s great. Hasbro is very thrilled with what we’re doing, and it’s such a great legacy.”
“To be able to be a small part of what they’ve done and to know that there will be future toys that use aspects of what we’re doing in these comics is really exciting and cool. I remember sitting in my bathtub with my G.I. Joe figures when I was like six or seven. And to now be a part of this world is no end of exciting.”
