The Boys isn’t your traditional superhero comic. Superheroes are corporate mascots, and they don’t always act heroic. The gritty adult comic explores what happens when corporations clash with clandestine government operatives, and the results are usually violent. The Garth Ennis comic was originally published by WildStorm before being picked up by Dynamite Entertainment.
The comic, which ended in 2012, has been adapted into a live-action series on Amazon Prime Video, which will air its fifth and final season in 2026. The upcoming finale for The Boys television series might have you wondering how things went down in the comics. If you’re curious, we’ve got the entire ending explained below. Keep in mind, there are some spoilers here, so read on with caution. Specifically, we’re covering the events in the last trade paperback, ‘The Bloody Doors Off,’ which covers The Boys #66-72. We’ll also touch on a few of the events that led to those final issues.
What happens in The Boys ending in the comics?

Homelander is killed by Black Noir, who is revealed to be an evil clone of Homelander. Black Noir had been created to frame Homelander for a series of crimes and be used as a way to gain leverage over him. Butcher kills Black Noir before he could do anymore damage, and from there, things get a bit crazy.
Before everyone can recover from these developments, Butcher reveals that he’s planning to eliminate every human who was exposed to Compound V, even his own teammates. Butcher goes on a supes killing spree, taking out Love Sausage, Mother’s Milk, Frenchman, and the Female.
Hughie has a climactic confrontation with Butcher on top of the Empire State Building. When a fall leaves Butcher’s partially paralyzed, he goads Hughie into killing him. The final issue picks up six months later, as Susan Rayner offers Hughie Butcher’s former role in overseeing supes. Hughie accepts, but vows to do things his own way, forsaking Butcher’s violent methods.
After the fall of the supes, Vought-American has pivoted away from superheroes, and changed their name to American Consolidated. They now focus on defense contracts, and view supes as a failed experiment. The issue ends with Hughie and Starlight walking off together, ready to build their new future.
Who dies in The Boys ending in the comics?

Let the bodies hit the floor! The final storyline in The Boys comic series, ‘The Bloody Doors Off,’ contains a ton of character deaths. A-Train is decapitated by Hughie after being manipulated by Butcher. Queen Maeve is killed by Homelander in a violent confrontation. The Boys #65 is a major turning point, as Homelander decapitates President Victor Neuman, Black Noir tears Homelander apart, and the Butcher uses a crowbar to remove Black Noir’s brain.
Butcher kills Love Sausage with an RPG, suffocates Mother’s Milk, blows up the Frenchman and the Female, and finishes off Dr. Jonah Vogelbaum. Finally, Hughie kills Butcher by stabbing him with a fence railing.
Hughie and Starlight survive, forced to live with the weight of everything they’ve experienced.
Will there be more comics for The Boys?

As of this writing, there are no plans for a continuation of The Boys. However, an eight-issue epilogue series titled Dear Becky was published in 2020. The limited series is set 12 years after The Boys comic series ended and focuses on Hughie Campbell going through Billy Butcher’s old diary entries. It turns out that CIA Director Susan Rayner sent Hughie the diary in an attempt to psychologically destroy him. Instead, Hughie was able to find closure and marries Annie.
Aside from that, I wouldn’t expect any continuation of The Boys. In a 2024 interview with CBR, The Boys co-creator Garth Ennis said he had no interest in writing a sequel to The Boys.
“Not right now,” Ennis says. “I always enjoy writing Butcher and his wife Becky, but I don’t really want to put them through any more shit. An alternative universe story where they avoid the godawful things that happened to them and live happily ever after would be highly enjoyable for me to write, but I suspect might not satisfy the audience. Or, indeed, publisher.”
Will The Boys TV finale closely follow The Boys comic finale?

There’s no telling how closely The Boys series finale will follow the comic books, but we already know that it won’t be a panel-by-panel adaptation. The Boys television series has already diverged from the comic book storyline in numerous ways. One example is Black Noir being killed by Homelander in season three.
The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke has also stated that the television show won’t end the same way as the comics. We can probably expect some similarities to the comic’s grand finale, and a few surprises as well. We’ll find out for sure when The Boys season five premieres in 2026.
