Thirty-some episodes into Critical Role Campaign 4, one of the biggest mysteries that still remains is: What's going on with Bolaire Lathalia? Yes, we know that Taliesin Jaffe's mysterious warlock character is, in fact, a sentient mask, but even that giant reveal was only the tip of the iceberg into the enigmatic antihero, and Critical Role forums have been abuzz with what could be his deal.

Unfortunately, according to Jaffe himself, no one has quite landed on perhaps the most important fact of his character - that is, how the god-killing Panto masks actually work.

Jaffe and costar Luis Carazo were recently speaking to Temple of Geek's Caitlin Tyrrell when this subject came up, prompted by a question about Bolaire's relationship with Liam O'Brien's Halandil Fang. In case you needed a reminder, Hal was deeply instrumental in Bolaire's life, as he put on the play that inspired Bolaire to investigate what he was beyond a magical weapon.

"There are things that he would like to express to Hal that he cannot," The Mighty Nein voice actor said, "Not romantic things, nothing like that - but the nature of what Hal means to him and what he's given him. There's just no space for it, and it's not in a space where it could be received, and he knows that. His honesty has been robbed of him, and honesty - or at the very least, truth, not necessarily honesty - is the most fundamental core of him. He has literally just had it taken away from him where he just is like, 'I want to show you what this means, but I can't because it will freak you the fuck out, and it will go very poorly and I need this.'"

"Even amongst the conversations that I've watched people have online," Jaffe continued, "No one has quite figured out exactly what that is. Part of it is just because the mechanisms of how the Panto Masks work hasn't really gotten into yet. Spoilers!"

What we do know so far about the Panto Masks is that A.) there are more than just Bolaire, one of whom we've actually met, and B.) they were used to kill the trickster god Rauwyn. But do they have souls of their own? What happens when they are reunited? As Jaffe says above, to know would be to spoil what's coming.
