Magic: The Gathering has plans as far out as 2034, and is beginning by reducing the number of new sets per year

Posting to Tumblr, MTG's head designer Mark Rosewater revealed a "less is more" strategy when it comes to the future of the world's most popular deck-building game

We have good news and we have bad news, Magic: The Gathering fans. The good news - Wizards of the Coast is already talking about the cards they'll be releasing nearly a decade from now. The bad news? The only thing we know about those cards thus far is that they'll be, well, fewer in number.

The story comes from a recent set of Tumblr posts from Mark Rosewater, head designer over at Wizards of the Coast for MTG. Asked about the future of the game by fans, Rosewater decided to allow for a special kind of scrying, peeling back the design curtain a bit to reveal that he has "been in meetings talking about 2034."

(I'm calling it now - we will see a Love Island Universes Beyond set in the next decade. PROVE ME WRONG.)

Let's temper that excitement, though. During the same rash of posts, Rosewater also revealed that, as far-reaching as those plans might be, they're also in a way scaled back, as the company plans on focusing on the quality of their new decks, not their quantity. But there's some good news even in this announcement - while Rosewater claims mTG is "decreasing the number of sets per year," he follows that up by saying the company's R&D department is also "been hiring new designers."

Overall, I suppose most of this really can be considered good news, albeit with a patience-tesing caveat. So when those lands drop based on the Villas, we can sure they'll be extra satisfying to play with.
