There's a new Magic: The Gathering set on the horizon, and with it comes a new artifact subtype. And what is that artifact subtype? Book.

The official Magic: The Gathering website announced the news in an article outlining the game mechanics of the upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven set. Wizards of the Coast didn't reveal a whole lot about the Book subtype, but they did include a tantalizing detail: "After a thorough review by the Biblioplex's Department of Library Sciences, a few existing cards will receive updates to be classified as Books. Stay tuned for a future Oracle update for all the specifics."

Take a look at one of the new Book cards below.

It makes sense that Secrets of Strixhaven would introduce a Book artifact subtype, given that Strixhaven is a magical school, after all. It would really break the immersion if the students were reading from Chromebooks.

Now the question remains: what are some of the existing cards that are going to be reclassified as Book in the near future?

Secrets of Strixhaven will be released on April 24, 2026.
