Against all odds (and even a successor), the original Nintendo Switch just became the best-selling Nintendo console ever
The Switch has surpassed the Nintendo DS as the best-selling Nintendo console ever.

Even with the Switch 2 making waves in its initial release, Nintendo has always had an uphill battle to overtake the phenomenal success of the original Switch. The console always seemed destined to become the company’s best-selling console of all time, and that moment has finally come to pass. According to their most recent financial statements, the Switch is now Nintendo’s best-selling console ever as it passes 155 million units sold.
Every quarter, Nintendo has to update investors on how the company is doing, which gives us a bit of insight into its sales. As part of their most recent financial disclosure statement, Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch has passed the 155 million units sold mark. That puts it just past the Nintendo DS, which had just over 154 million in lifetime sales before it was discontinued.
During the three months ending in December 2025, 3.25 million Nintendo Switch units were sold globally, which is respectable for a console that is nearly a decade old and is in direct competition with its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2. What is worth noting is that this puts the Switch within striking distance of the PlayStation 2’s lifetime sales record of around 160 million units. If the Switch maintains this momentum for the next nine months, it is hard to imagine it won’t take the title of best-selling console ever from Sony by the end of 2026.
What is more interesting is that the Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t just keeping pace with the original Switch; it is clearly outpacing its predecessor. In the first seven months since it was released, the Nintendo Switch 2 has amassed 15 million in global sales, something that it took the original Switch around a year to achieve.
