Fans of iconic British sitcom Red Dwarf got a rare treat earlier this month when it was revealed that we almost got a point-and-click adventure game based on the screwball sci-fi comedy. Thanks to a post on social media, we can see a glimpse into what could have been, as pixel-art depictions of the crew have got us positively tongue-tied.
Adam Riches, the co-founder of Robust Games, revealed in a post that he once pitched a Red Dwarf adventure game to Doug Naylor, creator of the original series. For our readers stateside, Red Dwarf was a long-running British sitcom that was a staple of sci-fi fans for decades. It was anarchistic and irreverent and made with the tiniest of budgets, like all the best British shows.
Though it seemingly ended in 2020 with a final film, Red Dwarf still lives on in the hearts and minds of fans. So Adam Riches’ post about the proposed game quickly made the rounds on social media. “A While back, we had the wonderful opportunity to pitch a Red Dwarf adventure game directly to Doug Naylor himself. While the project didn’t end up going ahead, we’re not free to share some of the work we produced for the pitch.”
That work included a charming pixel-art rendition of the main cast aboard the Star Bug ship. We don’t know much else about the proposed game or why it was ultimately rejected, but if this was how the rest of the Red Dwarf adventure game would have looked, it is a smeggin’ crime it didn’t get made.
