Matthew Vaughn has amassed a healthy collection of cult films over the years. From 2007’s underappreciated Stardust to this year’s star-studded spy thriller Argylle, the director has an impressive body of work to his credit, but that doesn’t seem to be stopping him from revisiting one of his best-known films for a reboot. Vaughn is bringing back the Kick-Ass series with not one but three films in the universe, culminating in an upcoming reboot film to cap off the trilogy.

The details of this one get a bit messy due to the ongoing secrecy around the movies, but, thanks to a report by Variety, we have a better picture of what the new Kick-Ass universe will entail. The first film in the trilogy is called School Fight, which, despite wrapping a couple of years ago, still hasn’t been released. It will be followed by Vaughn’s upcoming movie, The Stuntman. Both movies are produced by Vaughn and directed by Damien Walters, who have been working together for more than a decade.

It is all set to culminate in the reboot of 2010’s Kick-Ass, which has been a focal point for Vaughn since 2018. However, we wouldn’t get our hopes up too quickly. During an interview with Collider in January 2024, Vaughn confirmed that the script was around halfway done. None of the movies in the intended trilogy have an announced release date, meaning that it will probably be several years before we get to see the updated adventures of Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl. We also don’t know yet how School Fight and The Stuntman will connect to the upcoming Kick-Ass reboot. It all risks being a bit convoluted from the director-producer, but Argylle shows that he isn't above at least some self-indulgence here and there.
