The surprising Mad Max: Fury Road actors that are returning for Furiosa

Turns out not many actors want to head back into the Wastes for another movie.

Prequels are always tricky to cast. Getting people to play younger versions of themselves can lead to some awkward de-aging effects like we saw in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has sidelined that problem by completely recasting its main character in favor of Anya Taylor-Joy. If the movie isn’t bringing back Charlize Theron to reprise the role of Furiosa, is it bringing anyone back from Mad Max: Fury Road?

The answer is yes, but the list of actors returning for the prequel is surprisingly short. Either because of scheduling conflicts or simply being unwilling to play a younger version of themselves, most of the Fury Road cast are passing on the prequel. Considering the previous film was reportedly difficult and dangerous to film, we're not too surprised. The Mad Max: Fury Road actors returning for another battle through the wastes with Furiosa are:

  • Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus, Immortan Joe’s physically towering son
  • Angus Sampson as The Organic Mechanic, a doctor who works for Immortan Joe

That’s the full list of who we currently know is returning for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. We don’t know if Tom Hardy’s Max is going to make an appearance in the film, though that didn’t stop the studio from slapping his name on the title. Immortan Joe, the main villain of Mad Max: Fury Road, features quite prominently in the first trailer for Furiosa, but we don’t yet know who is playing him behind that mask. This is because Hugh Keays-Byrne, who portrayed the character in Fury Road, died in 2020.

Otherwise, there hasn’t been any sign that anyone else from the first movie will be back in George Miller’s fifth Mad Max movie. While the trailer offered all the action and style that we saw in Fury Road, we just hope it doesn’t spend too much time over-explaining Furiosa’s backstory.
