Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin came out 28 years ago, and while the movie has gained a cult following since its initial reception, it remains one of the most maligned Batman projects to this day. The movie's campy vibe, harkening back to Silver Age Batman comics, along with some questionable wardrobe choices, made it a tough sell for fans and general moviegoing audiences. Now, Alicia Silverstone, who played Batgirl in Batman & Robin, has dished on the chaotic experience of making the film.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Silverstone reflected on what it was like shooting a visual effects-heavy film. The Clueless actor said, "I remember we finally got the things on and we're standing there on top of this platform in the warehouse, and I turned to Chris [O'Donnell] and George [Clooney] and I said, 'What do we do?' And they're like, 'Don't worry, you'll figure it out.' I was like, 'What do you mean?' And then I hear over a big bullhorn, 'Throw the thing!' and I said, 'Chris, throw what at what?' He's like, 'Don't worry about it, you're overthinking it.' It's like, 'What do you mean? We don't even know what we're throwing!' because they added it all later."
Elsewhere in the interview, Silverstone echoed her confusion on set, "I remember a lot of things not making sense," she said. "We would be in a big warehouse and there was so many extras and so much going on.... [George] really was like a big brother in those circumstances. So cool. He stood up for me and was reasonable when things were not."
Regardless of how much she understood about what was going on set at any given time, Silverstone delivered her Batgirl performance with poise.
Batman & Robin is currently streaming on HBO Max, for those who want to know what was being thrown in that one scene.
Batman is the most well-known superhero in the world — surprisingly, given how much he loves hanging out in the dark. But between his comics, TV shows, movies, games, and more, DC's Dark Knight is the hero this city/country/world/universe needs, and we have all you need to enjoy him even more:
