DC Studios boss James Gunn told Jai Courtney not to rule out a return as Captain Boomerang after his death in The Suicide Squad: "You know these rules don’t really apply"

Death in comics doesn't mean much, so we could see Courtney back in the DCU eventually - provided James Gunn hasn't changed his mind.

Death is a funny thing in comics. Not funny haha (though sometimes it is) but you know what we mean. Most comic book universes have a loose relationship with character death and that philosophy seems to be extending to James Gunn’s new DCU, including the upcoming Superman movie, as he hasn’t ruled out bringing Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang back despite the character visibly exploding in 2021’s The Suicide Squad.

While promoting his new movie Dangerous Animals, Jai Courtney revealed that he was up for returning as Captain Boomerang in the new DC Universe of films and TV shows that James Gunn was putting together. However, fans will remember that Boomerang’s head very clearly exploded in the opening sequence of The Suicide Squad, something that Courtney objected to when he first read the script. “I was like, ‘Come on, man. Boomerang is cool,” he recalls telling Gunn at the time.

Fortunately, James Gunn understood that death in comics isn’t exactly a barrier to returning. “And James is like, ‘You know those rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?’” Courtney explained, adding, “So I have hope. Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.”

Whether James Gunn still feels the same way now that he’s in charge of the new DCU is a totally different story, but it is enough that Jai Courtney still holds out hope that he’ll get a call to play Captain Boomerang at least one more time. Death is just a stepping stone to a great story, after all.
