Deadpool's return to the MCU is "probably something I'm not going to do," says Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds is seemingly ruling out an Avengers: Doomsday appearance by Deadpool, but can he really be trusted?

With multiple different realities’ superheroes teaming up to co-star in December’s Avengers: Doomsday, one name has been conspicuous by its absence in any cast list: Ryan Reynolds, whose Deadpool was last seen in his own reality-bending team-up movie. Given that the Merc with a Mouth has proven to show up when least anticipated (and, arguably, least needed), what are the odds he’ll be a last-minute addition to the Doomsday crew?

“I’ve talked to Marvel off and on, always. We have a really great relationship, you know?” Reynolds told Collider when asked about any future Deadpool projects. “It's always a conversation. I'm always just looking to be additive and help on anything, even if it's not a movie I’m in. And I'm always writing. I mean, it's how I kind of get it out of my system. I love writing. That character and that world is one in which anything is possible, and that in and of itself allows for so much freedom and storytelling.”

So far, so purposefully vague. But tell us some more about what you’ve written, Ryan! That sounds interesting…

“I have a few things written that I love,” the actor/writer/multi-hyphenate continued. “I don’t know. We’ll figure out when the time is right. I’m not in any huge rush right now to do anything... Deadpool works best on both scarcity and surprise, so jumping right back into it full on right now is probably something I’m not going to do.”

So that would appear to suggest that we’re not going to see Deadpool on screen anytime soon, even with Avengers: Doomsday looming. Of course, this is the man who spent years denying that he had any connection with leaking test footage that eventually got the first Deadpool movie greenlit, only to finally come clean more than a decade later, so who knows what we can say for sure?

Deadpool & Wolverine, Reynolds’ last appearance as the character, is streaming on Disney+. Avengers: Doomsday is in theaters December 18.
