Ryan Reynolds finally admitted what we all knew: He was behind the Deadpool leak
Sit down, Batman. This mystery didn't need the world's greatest detective

Deadpool might have become one of the most recognizable (and highest-grossing) characters in the MCU now, but there was a time when movie studios wanted nothing to do with him. An R-rated superhero movie was seen as too risky in the family-friendly genre; at least, until the infamous test footage leaked online in 2014 and was almost universally loved by fans. Now, more than a decade after the footage showed up online, Ryan Reynolds has confirmed what we have always suspected – he is the one who leaked the Deadpool test footage online.
While at the Toronto International Film Festival, Ryan Reynolds came clean about being the one behind the leaked Deadpool test footage. “Some a—hole leaks it online and I’m like, you know, looking at the guy in the mirror brushing my teeth,” he said. “And I’m like, ‘Dude, what have you done? This could be punishable by law!’ But the internet forced the studio to say, ‘We’re gonna make this movie,’ and 24 hours later, that movie had a green light.”
He isn’t wrong, of course. Fan response to the footage was incredibly positive and convinced the studio to take a chance on a Deadpool movie. And, before you ask, no, Ryan Reynolds is not sorry. “Yes, I cheated a little, but I think I was onto something that people would be interested in. And I’m grateful that I listened to that instinct, and I’m grateful that I did the wrong thing in that moment.”
Fans have long suspected that Reynolds was behind the leak because it always seemed very on brand for him, but the actor has always dodged the question or denied being behind the leaked Deadpool test footage. This is the first time he has publicly admitted to being responsible, but we don’t think anyone is going to be upset, considering the series has repeatedly shattered records for R-rated movies at the box office.
