Monkey Man creator Dev Patel is still on revenge mode, but his follow-up movie is a period piece

Dev Patel continues to chart out his path as an actor-director-writer with The Peasant

We could always use more Dev Patel on our cinema screens. Luckily for humanity, Patel is returning with The Peasant, a film he's directing, starring, and writing, hot off the success of his first directorial outing, Monkey Man.

Like Monkey Man, The Peasant is another revenge thriller co-produced by Thunder Road, the production company behind the John Wick franchise. The Hollywood Reporter describes The Peasant as "having shades of Braveheart and John Wick as well as notes of King Arthur as it mashes up medieval knights with feudal India" - which sounds like a greatest hits of Patel's career thus far (let's not forget his power in The Green Knight). The story follows a shepherd in the 14th century "who embarks on a rage-fueled campaign against a group of mercenary knights who ransacked his community, revealing himself to be more than he seems." My eyeballs and mind need this movie already.

The story had a spot on the 2023 Black List as one of the industry's top unproduced scripts. Patel is reportedly sliding the setting of the story over from Italy to India, and he's co-writing new drafts of the script with Ms. Marvel's Will Dunn.

While Patel has had a fruitful career thus far in Hollywood, it's good to see him chart out his own path as a creative force to be reckoned with both behind and in front of the camera. Monkey Man showed us that he can bring the heat, and until The Peasant comes out, I'll keep shouting this to all the people in the back. There are still original stories like Monkey Man and Sinners to be found in Hollywood, and Patel is doing his part to show a version of India rarely seen in the West.
