Dune 3 casts Jason Mamoa's son as Paul Atreides' son in a move that has baffling implications for the future of the Dune franchise

Nakoa-Wolf Momoa is playing Leto II in Dune: Messiah and we're just as confuses as you are about it.

Dune fans can rest assured that the new film is still moving forward, despite the relative quiet that we’ve seen on the news front for Dune 3, titled Dune: Messiah. However, that changed this week as it was confirmed that the movie had cast the offspring of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya’s characters – with none other than Jason Mamoa’s son.

Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, who will appear in the same film as his famous father Jason Mamao, is a newcomer to the industry. In fact, Dune 3 will be his first big-screen role. He’ll be playing one of the children of Paul Atreides and Chani, played by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. The younger Mamao will be playing Leto II while Ida Brooke, who has appeared in Silo and The Primrose Railway Children, is playing the other twin, Ghanima.

This isn’t the first time a famously buff actor got his child to play a role in one of his films. Remember Chris Hemsworth’s daughter playing Thor’s adopted daughter in Thor: Love and Thunder? However, going off the plot of Dune: Messiah, both Leto II and Ghanima will play a big role in the upcoming movie and the future of the Dune universe.

So, casting an actor whose only accomplishment is being related to Aquaman is… well, we have questions. It also raises the question of just how many Mamoas on screen is too many. Fans of the original Dune novels will know that Jason Mamoa’s character is going to get a lot of, shall we say, screentime, according to Popverse’s resident Dune expert, Ashley V. Robinson. We’ll just leave it at that.

Maybe it will turn out fine and we won’t spend every moment of Dune 3 wondering why Jason Mamoa’s kid is playing one of the most important characters in the franchise. We’ll have to wait and see.
