Five Nights at Freddy’s star Matthew Lillard was lured in by a promise that he’d return in every movie - and that a trilogy was already planned

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is out in just a few weeks, but Scream star Matthew Lillard is already teasing us with a potential sequel

Matthew Lillard has a long history with horror cinema, going back to the first Scream movie in 1996. Nearly 30 years later, he’s starring in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, the second entry in the horror series. A series that, according to the actor, is planned for a third movie. But don’t worry, his character William Afton will be back in a potential third Five Nights at Freddy’s movie – and any future movies in the franchise.

In a recent interview, Matthew Lillard explained that when the director pitched the Five Nights at Freddy’s role to him, he was promised that this was just the start, not the end, of his time as William Afton. “The funny thing is that… I sat with the director, Emma Tammi, early on, and when I read the script, there was not a lot of lines, as you can see in the first movie. In fact, I think I made up 90% of those lines. I think I only like six actual lines in the script. And I said, ‘Why do you want me for this role? It's so small. I don’t really see anything for me to do.’ And she said, ‘Well, basically, your character is the Voldemort of this universe. And they won’t ever have a movie without your character… And they’re gonna make three of these movies.’ And so I was like, ‘Oh yeah. I’m in.’”

William Afton’s place in the Five Nights at Freddy’s universe is pretty well known to fans of the games, but the fact that they have always planned on having three movies is news to everyone, we think. Now that Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is about to hit theaters, maybe we’ll get an official announcement at Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 in the near future. With, of course, Matthew Lillard back as William Afton.

Five Nights at Freddy's 2 will be released December 5.
