Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is doing something most horror sequels struggle to do - connect new and returning characters

New faces are sent to the slaughter, but they look like they'll get the chance to be established before the usual FNAF chaos kicks in.

There is always a difficult line to walk when you make a horror sequel. Usually, you end up killing a lot of your cast by the end of the first movie, so you inevitably have to add some characters to the cast to replace the ones who got maimed, murdered, and otherwise slaughtered while also bringing back some of the original cast for continuity. Judging by the new trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, it will do a better job of managing this than most horror films.

The first full trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 starts off by showing us Mckenna Grace and Teo Briones as young paranormal investigators who are checking out the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Cut between shots of them looking around and getting horribly killed are scenes of the original cast trying to put their lives back together. Mike is trying to help his younger sister cope with the trauma of the first film.

Soon, Abby starts to receive messages from her “friends” at Freddy’s, which lures her, Mike, and Vanessa back into the plot. It is a remarkably good hook, considering the most sensible reaction to almost being killed by a bunch of haunted animatronics is to move as far away as possible.

Honestly, we’re a fan of this setup for the movie. It allows the three survivors from the first movie to show up in a way that doesn’t feel forced. Kids are weird. They do weird things that don’t make sense. Using Abby’s trauma as the draw to get the original cast to the new site means that the new characters can be established and have their moment without feeling like they are just there to prop up someone else.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is out in cinemas on December 5, 2025.
