How scary is Five Nights at Freddy’s 2? Bad enough that one of its stars wasn’t convinced that the movie could keep its PG-13 rating, according to director Emma Tammi.
Talking to Dexerto, Tammi said that the much-anticipated sequel to 2023’s video game adaptation is purposefully darker and more frightening than its predecessor. “I think the audiences that maybe wanted the first one to go to scarier places will be really satisfied,” she said of the new movie. “It’s funny, Matthew Lillard saw the movie the other day and he called me and he was like, ‘It’s so scary — is this still PG-13?’”
Yes, it is, for those who are wondering — and maintaining that rating while satisfying the fanbase has proven to be a one of the guiding principles of the production, Tammi explained.
“We wanted to be inclusive of the younger audiences, and at the same time, we don’t want to limit how dark and scary it can feel for the older audiences,” she said. “So I think we’ve really aced that on this one… With the game and this one in particular – I’m speaking mostly about FNAF 2, because that was really the game that we were linking this movie to – the jump scares are so effective. And then just the overall creepy ambience of the space is also so effective. But it’s not a hugely bloody, gory experience. So I actually think that the tone of these films feels very in sync with the games.”
